Dignitas\Mick: Call of Duty 4 - First Glance

Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare hit the shelves just a short while ago and the community seems to be smitten. I have broken down the basics of the game to help answer some of the many questions that have been circulating.

Maps

First off let’s start with the maps in COD4, there are no ports from previous CoD titles meaning there are no familiar maps. I’m taking on only maps I feel are competitive in nature.

MP_Backlot.

This map is liable to stay in rotation for the foreseeable future, with a healthy balance of close quarter and long range battle grounds. It’s perfect for competitive play. It’s one of the most balanced maps available and offers great conditions for creative strategies. There are two bombsites, A & B, the A bombsite is a construction site that is surrounded by walls which both teams are able to spam. The B bombsite is slightly more open to attack, and easier to defend should you manage to plant the bomb.

MP_Crash

Crash is one of the most exciting maps available to date and seems to be one of the more popular maps amongst the community. The A bombsite seems to get all of the action on this map, comprised of three floors (ground, second, roof) it has a wonderful layout perfect for original strategies. A good use of grenades is what will get you into the bomb site and good team work is what will you keep you there. Crash has both the balance and the attributes to allow for constant reworking of strategies which will not only help keep it in rotation but make it a fan favourite, battles fought here are guaranteed to be exciting.

MP_District

District is a map which at first I didn’t think much of, but after playing it a few times it’s apparent that it does have potential. The community also seems to be taken with the map and it’s apparently quite popular, a good sign of a long life cycle. A good sniper really has the opportunity to shine on a map like this, with huge areas of open space and many points of cover. District is very reminiscent of the map Goldrush from Enemy Terrority, but maybe that’s just me.

MP_Crossfire

Crossfire is another map that has hidden potential and originally wasn’t a favourite of mine, or many others, but it plays very well in competitive matches. Grenades play a big part in this map, open areas leave attacking teams vulnerable to sniper attacks and so smoke grenades offer vital cover. Flash grenades are also a key in being able to safely breach rooms without losing men. Crossfire really does live up to its name, especially when defending.

MP_Strike

Strike is an incredibly open map. Huge open spaces between enemy lines create opportunities for shoot outs at a distance, making Strike very popular. This map also boasts potential for some very innovative strategies and teams with above average team work will shine on Strike. Attacking on this map requires a team effort as a result of a defence oriented lay out.

MP_Vacant

Not a huge favourite of mine but it is becoming more and more popular with teams. One thing I have noticed which some people may not of is the fact you can throw grenades, flashes and even smoke grenades through the open rooftops into another part of the map which has an open roof. This I think will bring in a lot of tactics and a lot of Set Nades. Vacant is full of halls and tight corners so expect a lot of mp5, shotgun and definitely spam.

meh, couldn't edit my post so here goes: on commenting the article i gotta say vacant is crap. atleast as long as hitblips are on "1". and i sure would love that the community agreed on 1 ruleset. however, i fail to see that happening anytime soon. just ashame that cdc couldn't work together with mce. if they would've done that and agreed upon something i think they might have been able to form some kinda standard.

well the edit button is right next to your username and as for cdc and mce working together, there rulesets are basically the same. I'm quite happy with the ruleset atm it could do with some small changes but thats just personal preference to be honnest.

I agree to an extent about your ET comment, although the speed is still somewhat restrictive. A good example, is if you 'mistime' a jump in combination with the sprint to get over a wall. You will stop and then your model will move vertically and you've no control or power and very liable to get owned. If enough ET players can get drawn towards CoD4 I can see it achieving more than CoD2 purely because of the work rate of said players to get things down.

mick. try to edit your own comment then. i bet you'll get "Under construction This feature is to be released within the next coming weeks of ESGC, the initial site launch is to give you the user a taster of what is to come and hope you visit the functional parts of the site to get a taste of the ESGC experience" when u hit "Post Reply" :p anyways. yeh. mce and cdc are basically the same, that's why its even more sad that they just couldn't agree with eachother on one ruleset rather then creating one each. mce had more of the "large" community behind them. however, since crossfire now have both the qcup and cdc the competitive scene will be forced somehow to use that one. ah well. time will solve most problems. just think it's tricky now as u don't know whether to play with or without a thing such as the red dot.
